Nova Scotia Wineries


This province is part of the east coast of Canada. Its located in the middle between the equator and the north pole. The growing season is shorter than Ontario and cooler.The common practice to protect vines is to cover them with soil or straw. The two areas where grapes are grown are in the Annapolis Valley on the Bay of Fundy and the Northeast Shore.

Grande Pre Wines

This winery has a gallery overlooking the Minas Baisin of the Bay of Fundy, a restaurant and a greenhouse for clonial selection of grape varieties that will suit the local terroir. In partnership with Agriculture Canada in Kentville the search for new grape varieties which are suitable continues. Grape varieties used include L'Acadie (locally developed) Seyval Blanc, New York Muscat, Vidal, Marechal Foch and Leon Millot. Tours are available at a charge of 6 dollars per person.

Jost Vineyards

Summer hours June 15 to September 15 Monday to Saturday 9am to 6pm, Sunday 12pm to 6pm Winter hours September to June 15 close at 5pm. (call for opening time) Coming from a 300 year tradition of successful grape growing and wine making in Germany the Jost family headed by Hans Wilhelm opened their winery on the on Nova Scotia's north shore in November 1983 and started selling through the government retails stores in 1984 and then directly to the public in 1985. Hans died in 1988 but his son Hans Christian has carried on the family tradition. The winestore contains a loft section where you can purchase folk art childrens gifts, quilts, jewellery, pottery, weaved crafts, and stained glass items. A deli is also on the premises. Grapes used include Marechal Foch, L’Acadie Blanc, Muscat, Leon Millot, Geisenheim, Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, Mischurnitz and Severnyi. Tastings are complimentary with tours available in the summer between noon and 3pm (group tours of over 10 people require an appointment.)

Habitant Vineyards
10318 Highway 221 Canning 902-582-7565 Open Monday to Friday 10 am to 5 pm Saturday 10 am to 6 pm, Sunday 12 to 5pm This winery is an attempt to grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Nova Scotia to make quality sparkling wine. This winery has a nature walk through the vineyards to the tidal baisin of the Bay of Fundy with it's 30 foot tides twice daily. Grapes used include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Seyval Blanc, Muscat, L'Acadie Marechal Foch, and Baco Noir. Free public tastings with winery tours available by appointment.

Saint Famille Wines
Dyke Road (exit 7 off Highway 101 Falmouth) 902-798-8311 Toll free 1-800-565-0993 Open January to March Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm Sunday Noon to 5 pm April to December Monday to Saturday 9 am to 5pm Sunday Noon to 5 pm Located at the gateway of the Annapolis Valley this winery is on the site of an Acadian village which was settled in the 1680's. The winery building has a cafe and deck for summer functions and a fall harvest wine festival. Grape varieties used include Chardonnay, Riesling, Seyval Blanc, Ortega, L'Acadie, German hybrids Michurinetz, Marechal Foch Baco Noir, Cabernet Franc. Winery tours are available May to October daily 11am to 2pm (large groups book in advance).

Telder-Berry Farm Cottage Winery

Visits to the operation are available, contact the winery and also inquire about tastings

Lunenberg Country Winery

Williamsdale Winery
