Outer Banks may be switching up the season (from summer to fall) when it premieres with Season 4, but one thing remains true: The Pogues are a chosen family who will go on an epic adventure. Netflix released the first teaser trailer of the upcoming season, and it packs a lot into one minute. As a reminder, this season catches up with the Pogues after finding the gold at El Dorado, and it will detail what leads John B, Sarah, Kiara, JJ, Pope, and Cleo to take Wes Genrette’s proposal to find Blackbeard’s treasure.
From teases of their deep-sea-diving treasure hunt to bling-and-you’ll-miss-them glimpses at fan-favorite couples and everything in between, Outer Banks’s Season 4 teaser trailer has too many great details that you won’t want to miss. Here are five of the best:
1. The Pogues are steady with each other.
The first shot of this teaser trailer harks back to Outer Banks’s pilot. Back in 2020, John B stood on top of a roof of a house that wasn’t his – with Pope, JJ, and Kiara down below. John B practiced his balance then, but here, he’s steady. Though the teaser trailer doesn’t show if the other Pogues are below, it’s safe to bet they’re somewhere nearby. After all, John B is standing on “Poguelandia 2.0″ — a major step up from a stranded beach. But the place is one thing – the people make this symbolism all the more meaningful.
The Pogues are bigger and better now. Since 2020, Sarah Cameron left her life as a Kook behind to go “full Pogue,” and Cleo Anderson joined the group and made it feel complete. Relationships have begun and ended, too. But John B and Sarah found their way back to each other, and Pope and Cleo found the end of their No Love Club with each other. All the while, the friends have become an even more tightly-knit chosen family. This group has a lot coming their way in OBX’s upcoming season, but they will tackle it together.
2. The makings of “Poguelandia 2.0” and the Kildare Island Surf Shop
As for “Poguelandia 2.0,” this teaser trailer shows the Pogues building the place where they live and “run a fairly successful bait, tackle, and charter tour shop.” All of that is lost to the 18-month time jump at the end of Outer Banks Season 3. Thankfully, this season will backtrack to show how the Pogues take El Dorado’s gold and build their new “normal.” John B, Sarah, Kiara, JJ, Pope, and Cleo will face financial setbacks that lead them to take on their new treasure hunt, but it will be exciting to see that time between adventures.
That down yet productive time could be some of the most constructive for character development and strengthening interpersonal relationships. It gives the show the time and space to reconnect with everyone before sending them off to find Blackbeard’s treasure. Considering that the trip may separate the Pogues, as the other seasons prove, this time may be the most significant time with all the characters in one place. Because of that possibility, these flashbacks are already worth treasuring.
3. JJ and Kiara are happy — and together.
It seems like Netflix is keeping any details about John B & Sarah and Pope & Cleo’s relationship a surprise until at least the full-length trailer. On the other hand, this teaser trailer has two glimpses of JJ and Kiara’s relationship. One of which looks a lot tenser than the other. Considering Outer Banks Season 3 was a whirlwind for the friends-to-lovers romance, here’s to hoping they catch their breath a bit before testing the waters.
This teaser trailer sets hope reasonably high for Outer Banks Season 4 because it’s the first time Sarah Cameron isn’t visibly distraught in a promotional video. Of course, there is still time for all of that to change. However, it’s optimistic that the teen drama appears to be turning tides to something new. That alone is enough to inspire confidence that JJ and Kiara will experience ebbs and flows – as is expected for a TV show to be interesting – but that won’t irreparably damage their relationship. They can have a moment before JJ appears to dive off a boat to find a sunken ship and a cute beat in each other’s arms. They aren’t mutually exclusive; both mean more depth for Jiara, which is good.
4. The Pogues have everything to lose, and the Kooks know it.
OBX’s formative rivalry between the Pogues and the Kooks is back and thriving in the Season 4 teaser trailer. It’s a strangely welcome surprise since the show has moved – literally, geographically – so far past that over the last three seasons. Intriguingly, this season appears to return to the teen drama’s roots when the stakes are higher than ever.
Ironically, the teaser trailer teases less than the photos, but the photos make it appear that returning to OBX means learning about Topper and Rafe’s respective romantic prospects. Instead of honing in on that, the new minute of footage looks into what the Pogues risk in reviving this rivalry. JJ, the eternal pessimist, tries to act like everything is the same. He tries to pretend there is “Nothing to lose, right?” John B quickly counters, “No, we’ve got everything to lose this time.” That distinction speaks volumes about where Outer Banks Season 4 finds the Pogues. They have more than they ever imagined for themselves – in Poguelandia 2.0, the Kildare Island Surf Shop, and each other.
Those personal investments are far more eternal than any financial kickback from any gold, and that’s the layered context that frames their quest for Blackbeard’s treasure.
5. Bring it on home, Outer Banks!
It’s a challenge to watch this teaser trailer and not look at it through the lens that it could be Outer Banks’s final season. Netflix hasn’t confirmed one way or the other yet. However, the context clues woven throughout this one minute raise a lot of questions. For instance, John B’s being on the roof is a direct parallel that could be the bookend the show needs to begin its final season. There’s also the fact that this season sets the bar high for personal stakes and financial rewards with the adventure.
Of course, Outer Banks outdoes itself every season, leveling up the treasure hunts, but this one feels different because of all the previously mentioned details.
The most significant sign making this season stand out is Netflix promoting the teaser trailer with “Bring it on home.” Outer Banks fans will know that line. Big John would say it when he rang the bell to call John B back to the Chateau. That line went on to get a second life on social media as a meme, but the OBX Season 4 teaser trailer reclaims it in a sentimental sense. It gives this season a full-circle feeling that brings a renewed emotional resonance to every detail on this list.
Whether it’s the final one or not, all of this creates quite the momentum for Season 4. We can’t wait to see what Outer Banks does with it.
