    CNNBusiness Opinion —Social media companies are soaking up the billions in advertising dollars that once flowed to legacy media companies — a trend that continues to accelerate despite an ever-growing mountain of evidence indicating the Silicon Valley titans govern their ballooning kingdoms with little regard for how their products negatively impact society.While the dramatic shift has empowered these companies, it has also simultaneously dealt massive blows to news organizations, most of which are struggling to survive.Over the last few years, nearly every major news organization has cut staff to survive. Hundreds of local outlets have closed their doors as advertising dollars disappear.Not only are these news organizations crucial to the communities —both local and national— that they serve, but they also diligently work to ensure that their platforms are grounded in facts and free of abuse. But the technology platforms, for some reason, are judged by markedly different rules. It’s not fair to say the road is littered with examples pointing to bad behavior. It’s buried in them. Time and time again, companies like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, and others have been caught allowing harmful content to exist on their platforms. In many cases, such content has not only been permitted to exist, butturbochargedvia powerful algorithms. Batsh*t crazy conspiracy theories that radicalize audiences? Check.But when the executives of those companies are questioned about it, they release vague public statements while failing to address the root causes in a meaningful way.Last week, The WSJ and The NYT published reports indicating that Meta willfully allowed child sexual exploitation to exist on Instagram. “The content, often featuring young girls in bikinis and leotards, was sold to an audience that was overwhelmingly male and often overt about sexual interest in the children in comments on posts or when they communicated with the parents,” The Journal’s Jeff Horowitz and Katherine Blunt reported.The two noted that Meta said it is committed to child safety, but they also reported: “A review by the Journal of some of the most popular parent-run modeling accounts on Instagram and Facebook revealed obvious failures of enforcement."In effect, a substantial portion of the advertising dollars that once supported the carefully manicured gardens of legacy media outlets have migrated over to a free-for-all hellscape ruled by mostly unregulated Silicon Valley deities who prioritize profits and growth over the public good. As a result, the news organizations that work to behave responsibly are seeing their business models collapse and their future jeopardized, while social media platforms tout record profits.It’s a co*cktail for disaster — one that will have profound impacts on civilization in the years ahead. News organizations, crucial to a functioning society, are being hollowed out if not outright dying.

    Meta approved hate-filled Facebook ads that called for violence in Europehttps://ift.tt/mjIaFvGMeta is again facing allegations it’s not doing enough to prevent the spread of hate speech and violent content in Facebook ads. A new report details eight such ads, targeting audiences in Europe, that were approved despite containing blatant violations of the company’s policies around hate speech and violence.The report comes from watchdog organization Ekō, which is sharing its work to draw attention to the social network’s “sub-standard moderation practices” ahead of the Digital Services Act (DSA) going into effect in Europe later this week. It details how, over a period of a few days in early August, the organization attempted to buy 13 Facebook ads, all of which used AI-generated images and included text that was clearly against the company’s rulesEkō pulled the ads before they could be seen by any users. The group requested exact wording of the ads be withheld, but offered descriptions of some of the most egregious examples. Approved ads included one, placed in France, that “called for the execution of a prominent MEP because of their stance on immigration,” as well as an ad targeting German users that “called for synagogues to be burnt to the ground to ‘protect White Germans.’” Meta also approved ads in Spain that claimed the most recent election was stolen and that people should engage in violent protests to reverse it.“This report was based on a very small sample of ads and is not representative of the number of ads we review daily across the world," a spokesperson for Meta said in a statement. "Our ads review process has several layers of analysis and detection, both before and after an ad goes live. We’re taking extensive steps in response to the DSA and continue to invest significant resources to protect elections and guard against hate speech as well as against violence and incitement.”While there were a handful of ads that were stopped by Meta’s checks, Ekō says that the ads were prevented from running because they were flagged as political, not because of the violent and hate-filled rhetoric in them. (The company requires political advertisers to go through an additional vetting process before they are eligible to place ads.)Ekō is using the report to advocate for additional safeguards under the DSA, a sweeping law that requires tech platforms to limit some kinds of targeted advertising and allow users to opt out of recommendation algorithms. (Several services, including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok have recently made changes to comply with the latter provision.)
